VC2 STATUS LETTER April 04

Dear Customer,

The status of the VC 2 is as follows: NO VC 2s models: 010 through 032 are being newly authorized. Models 029 and later (plus series) are the only models being sold and authorized.

This is the so called "VC2+ or Plus series. There are NO viable "hacks" available for the pluses. There have been some reported fixes, but none have proved to be "bulletproof'. Hold on to your money.

Authorizations to older models had been accomplished by obtaining channel authorizations codes from cable head-ends and re-computing WIZARD numbers from them. The numbers were typically available for test purposes only, from bulletin boards, etc.

A typical "Pirate Fix" has been to sell a modem and software for about $200 to $400.00. It was installed inside any model excluding 029 (plus) box. Modem places call to BBS when channels do not decode automatically. The sources of these numbers has "dried-up", occasionally, on the IRC #SATELLITE channel, somebody will post vaid WIZARD numbers.

A condition of programmers offering lower prices for programming and pirates having to increase their prices due to the complexity of the current "fix", has led to the situation of VC2 Piracy no longer being an economical alternative. When a year's cost of pirate fix is about the same as legal authorization; well you can figure it out yourself. The "final nail" in the VideoCipher's coffin was the introduction of the DirecTV D.S.S. System. It has all but wiped the VC2 out of competition.

There are no fixes for converting the "older boxes" to the newer datastrearm. The only apparent difference is earlier and current models is the location of the "digital data". In older boxes it's located approximately where the horizontal sync signal used to be.

In the new (029) series or non-010, 018, 032, it's located in the vertical blanking interval. The difference in the timing relationship of the two is why older boxes cannot decode the newer datastream. A modification to extract the newer datastream to replace it in the older datastream position would possibly allow old boxes to function as newer ones. Nobody has done this. Apprently is isn't going to happen.
